Head injuries occur more frequently than people generally think. According to the Centers for Disease Control, almost two million people suffer from reported head injuries every year. That means that 4,000 people on any given day have documented head injuries. That number only includes the number of head injuries that are reported. Unfortunately, many of these injuries can be life-threatening, causing injury to the brain. What’s worse is that while in some cases the signs will be immediate, at other times they can manifest later. Some common symptoms of a traumatic brain injury include the following:
- Headaches: This is a common telltale sign of a head injury, especially if the headache persists long after the injury.
- Loss of coordination: This can include dizziness, loss of balance or being dazed or confused.
- Change in sleep habits: The change in sleep habits can include sleeping too much or having bouts of insomnia.
- Changes to sight and hearing: These changes include sensitivity to light or ringing in the ears.
It’s important to watch for these effects after a head injury. In the event that any of these symptoms occur after you or someone you know suffers a head injury, it is best to seek medical attention.
